The Beach Bum’s Itinerary:
Mykonos – (Ano) Koufonisi – Naxos – Paros – Antiparos
Going to the beach is serious business in Greece.
For us Greeks, summer doesn’t start until that first swim in the sea, that first iced coffee or cold beer with your feet buried in the sand and your hair dripping of salt water. I am talking on behalf of the whole Greek nation when I say that this is the highlight of our year, so simple and yet so precious…
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in Greece, join us on our national pastime and spend the day by (and in) the water. Happily, the Beach Bum’s itinerary caters for both beach bums by birth and sworn winter lovers!
Mykonos, Koufonisia (Ano Koufonisi & neighbouring Kato Koufonisi), Naxos, Paros and Antiparos have some of the best beaches you can find in the Cyclades and maybe even Greece*.
Apart from incredible beaches, this itinerary will also enable you to experience first hand the diverse Cycladic vibes and crowd. From the international glitz of Mykonos to low key and slow pace small island life of Koufonisia and Antiparos. Then, there’s family friendly, mountainous Naxos and ‘It’ island Paros which has something to offer to everyone, no matter what they are after.
So, pack your swimsuit and let’s go!
*Competition is fierce for a place in the list of best beaches in the whole of Greece as there are so many beautiful (and swimmable) beaches throughout the country…

The Seafarer’s Itinerary:
Mykonos – (Ano) Koufonisi – Amorgos – Santorini
There are so many Greek islands worth exploring, each one offering something unique. One of the main goals of this blog is to cover as many as possible! However, I am fully aware that many people will not be able to visit Greece multiple times.
For that once in a lifetime trip to Greece, the Seafarer’s itinerary might the best one to take.
The Seafarer’s itinerary will take you through some of the most photogenic islands in Greece. It also achieves a nice balance between super popular and off the beaten track destinations, ensuring you get the best of both worlds.
You can live it up in Mykonos and Santorini and experience authentic, low-key island life in Koufonisi and Amorgos. This is an itinerary filled with sun-drenched Cycladic villages, whitewashed cobblestone alleys, beaches with turquoise water and dramatic landscapes with jaw dropping views.
From the iconic architecture and cosmopolitan haunts of Mykonos and the turquoise waters of Koufonisi, to the jagged windswept peaks and slow pace of Amorgos and the drama of Santorini‘s caldera, these are the Cyclades’ and Greece’s greatest hits.
This is a trip filled with one of a kind experiences.
PS. In case you are wondering, I named this itinerary ‘Seafarer’s’ because it covers the greatest distance compared to the rest. However, due to the popularity of Mykonos and Santorini, the fastest boats operate these routes daily, so the only way you can tell, is by looking at the map!
Extended route option:
If you have more time in your hands, perennial crowd pleaser Paros is an easy addition to this itinerary (Mykonos → Paros ~1h | Paros → (Ano) Koufonisi ~1h)

TOP 5 MYKONOS ISLAND HOPPING:
NO4. THE REVELLER’S ITINERARY

Logistics & travel time (on fastest ferries):
- Fly in to Mykonos
(from Europe / Athens / Thessaloniki)
(or boat from Athens ~3.5h) - Short ferry rides in between:
Mykonos → Paros ~1h
Paros → Antiparos ~10min
Paros → Ios ~1h - Boat to Athens from Ios (~4.5h)
No of days:
12 days (approx. 3 days per island)
The Reveller’s Itinerary:
Mykonos – Paros – Antiparos – Ios
Let’s get loud!
But first, I need to clarify. The islands included in this itinerary are by no means only intended for partying. Personally, I have visited most of them with friends and my husband and you can definitely have a relaxing / romantic time in all of them.
However, if you are looking for beach parties or exciting nightlife, you will definitely find that here.
Mykonos will give you plenty of opportunities to revel in luxury amongst the international jetset, whether on the beach or in town. While Mykonos feels polished and upscale, Ios is known for its carefree party atmosphere and lively bar scene centred around Chora. Expect crowded summer nights, late-night dancing and a younger international crowd, particularly during July and August.
Chic Paros offers a more relaxed nightlife scene, particularly around Naousa, where elegant cocktail bars, waterfront lounges and lively late-night spots create a vibrant but less intense atmosphere than Mykonos or Ios.
Last but not least, Antiparos is the dark horse. It is generally considered as an undiscovered, laid-back kind of a place, and it is. But it is also home to a select few legendary bars and nightclubs that stay open until the sun goes up. You can easily find yourself seeing the sunrise with your sandals in one hand and a drink in the other!
Best for? The young and young at heart.

TOP 5 MYKONOS ISLAND HOPPING:
NO5. THE ATHENIAN’S ITINERARY

Logistics & travel time (on fastest ferries):
- Boat from Athens to Kythnos ~1h 40min
- Super short to medium duration ferry rides in between:
Kythnos → Syros ~2.5h
Syros → Mykonos ~30min - Fly out from Mykonos
(to Europe / Athens / Thessaloniki)
(or boat to Athens ~3.5h)
No of days:
9 (approx. 3 days per island)
The Athenian’s Itinerary:
Kythnos – Syros – Mykonos
Just because you’re travelling to Mykonos doesn’t mean every stop on your journey needs to be one of Greece’s headline destinations. The Athenian’s itinerary is a curation of islands where Athens’ ‘it crowd’ spends their summer weekends, and the reasons why are far more than just proximity to the capital.
Kythnos and Syros remain refreshingly under the radar for international visitors, yet both offer exceptional dining, stylish accommodation and a distinctly Greek sense of sophistication that has long attracted discerning Athenians. As a result, some of the capital’s best boutiques, restaurants and bars have opened outposts in order to cater to their loyal clientele.
Kythnos, Syros and Mykonos shine on their own merit, but if you are looking for that extra ‘urban bling’, this itinerary is for you. Nevertheless, even if ‘urban bling’ is not your thing (it rhymes!), don’t be discouraged from considering this itinerary.
Kythnos will provide you with that precious small-island experience. Long favoured by sailors and Athenians in the know, the island combines pristine beaches, authentic villages and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. You can spend the day discovering glorious coves and the evening exploring charming cobblestone alleys and traditional tavernas.
Syros’ mind-blowing architecture, a unique combination of Cycladic minimalism and neoclassical grandeur, will leave you wondering why this island is not as famous as its mega-star neighbour Mykonos. As you wander through Ermoupoli’s elegant streets, you’ll discover layers of history reflected in its remarkable buildings, from the island’s maritime prosperity and commercial importance to the coexistence of Greek Orthodox and Catholic communities that have shaped its distinctive identity.
All in all, the Athenian’s itinerary is a whirlwind trip filled with the up-and-coming destination vibes of Kythnos, the understated, timeless elegance of Syros and unapologetic Myconian glitz. The best of all worlds, perhaps?

HOW TO PLAN YOUR GREEK ISLAND HOPPING TRIP FROM MYKONOS

HOW TO BOOK BOAT / PLANE TICKETS TO THE GREEK ISLANDS
I am fully aware that for non-Greeks, checking itineraries and booking ferries or planes for the Greek islands may sound complicated and overwhelming. But that’s what I am here for!
I have explained all about boat services, planes routes and island hopping in the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands in the blog posts linked below. If you are travelling in July or August, I would recommend booking boat and plane tickets early -May at the latest. Most bookings can be made online.
PS. Transiting to the islands via Athens? Make sure to read all about Athens’ airport and ports and how to get from plane to boat and vice versa:

BEST TIME TO VISIT THE GREEK ISLANDS
June, July, August and early September is the best time to visit and fully experience the uniqueness of Greek summer. Note that there is usually a pleasant breeze in the islands that makes the heat quite bearable, even in high summer.
Late spring or early autumn may be more appropriate if you wish to go hiking or really hate the heat.
