Paros island hopping: 5 extraordinary itineraries to easily do on your own

Paros itineraries island hopping

Paros is definitely the new ‘place to be’ in the Greek islands and rightly so.

Paros’ unparalleled Cycladic architecture and landscape, golden beaches, countless charming venues for wining and dining and easy access from Athens, make visiting the island a no-brainer. Furthermore, there are so many beautiful islands close by (10min boat journey to 1h+), all of them unique and definitely worth exploring.

Given the island’s central location in the Cyclades (the islands in the centre of the Aegean Sea), starting (or ending) an island hopping trip from Paros is a great idea, and one quite easy to implement.

Why not visit other famous islands such as Mykonos and Santorini or go off the beaten track in the Small Cyclades? And while you are there, check out the secret celebrity haunts of neighbouring Antiparos or continue your wind surfing tour in Naxos!

In this blog post, you’ll find the 5 best island hopping itineraries starting from or ending in (or passing through) Paros. You can do all itineraries completely on your own. No guides or ‘experts’ required. You don’t even need to speak a word of Greek -though you will get big smiles if you try!

Grab your friends, partner, family or go solo, hop on a ferry and let’s explore some of the best corners of Greece.

    Sifnos → Milos ~1h
    and fly out from Milos
    (to Athens / Thessaloniki)
    (or boat to Athens 3.5h)

The Authentic Cycladic Itinerary:
Paros & Antiparos – Sifnos – Serifos [or Milos]

Why have I named this itinerary ‘Authentic’? Not sure. I went with my gut on this one.

I guess it’s because Serifos and Sifnos have more Greek visitors than most of the islands I mention in this blog post. Or because, growing up in Greece, summer holidays in Paros and Milos were super common, a classic solution to the ‘which island should we visit this year’ problem (tough, I know).

I do have to admit though that, today, Paros and Milos have become a hotspot of travellers from around the world, with all the fancy restaurants and luxury hotels that this entails. Does Paros’ and Milos’ recent popularity and hype negate my title, then? Absolutely not.

Paros and Antiparos set the tone for the Authentic Cycladic itinerary with whitewashed villages, golden beaches and that effortless blend of sophistication and simplicity that has made them enduring favourites among Greeks and international visitors alike.

Sifnos adds a generous helping of gastronomic tradition, elegant hilltop villages and some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Cyclades. Serifos brings a wilder and more rugged beauty to the mix, where dramatic landscapes, quiet beaches and a spectacular Chora (capital town) perched high above the sea provide a glimpse of the Cyclades as they once were.

Should you choose Milos instead, expect extraordinary geological formations, hidden coves and some of the most striking coastal scenery in Greece.

This is an itinerary filled with pure Cycladic beauty. Classic sun drenched sugar cube houses and wind swept landscapes, surrounded by serene sandy beaches or wild jagged cliffs and the heartachingly blue sea. As Greek of a blue as it can be.

To be honest, all itineraries in this blog post exhibit the qualities of the Cycladic archetype. But, you will just have to trust me on this one. It does not get more Cycladic than this. You’ll see.

TOP 5 PAROS ISLAND HOPPING:
NO2. THE BEACH BUM’S ITINERARY

Beach Bums Itinerary Cyclades

Logistics & travel time (on fastest ferries):

  • Fly in to Mykonos
(from Europe / Athens / Thessaloniki)
    (or boat from Athens ~3.5h)
  • Short ferry rides in between:
    Mykonos → Ano Koufonisi ~1.5h
    Ano Koufonisi → Naxos ~40min
    Naxos → Paros ~40min
    Paros → Antiparos ~10min
  • Fly out from Paros (to Athens / Thessaloniki)
    (or boat to Athens ~3h)

No of days:

15 days (approx. 3 days per island, including Antiparos)

Shorter route option:

This is quite the long itinerary -feel free to remove destinations that don’t suit your vibes!

The Beach Bum’s Itinerary:
Mykonos – (Ano) Koufonisi – Naxos – Paros – Antiparos

Going to the beach is serious business in Greece.

For us Greeks, summer doesn’t start until that first swim in the sea, that first iced coffee or cold beer with your feet buried in the sand and your hair dripping of salt water. I am talking on behalf of the whole Greek nation when I say that this is the highlight of our year, so simple and yet so precious…

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in Greece, join us on our national pastime and spend the day by (and in) the water. Happily, the Beach Bum’s itinerary caters for both beach bums by birth and sworn winter lovers!

Mykonos, Koufonisia (Ano Koufonisi & neighbouring Kato Koufonisi), Naxos, Paros and Antiparos have some of the best beaches you can find in the Cyclades and maybe even Greece*.

Apart from incredible beaches, this itinerary will also enable you to experience first hand the diverse Cycladic vibes and crowd. From the international glitz of Mykonos to low key and slow pace small island life of Koufonisia and Antiparos. Then, there’s family friendly, mountainous Naxos and ‘It’ island Paros which has something to offer to everyone, no matter what they are after.

So, pack your swimsuit and let’s go!

*Competition is fierce for a place in the list of best beaches in the whole of Greece as there are so many beautiful (and swimmable) beaches throughout the country…

TOP 5 PAROS ISLAND HOPPING:
NO3. THE GLOBETROTTER’S ITINERARY

Globetrotter's Itinerary II

Logistics & travel time (on fastest ferries):

  • Fly in to Paros
    (from Athens / Thessaloniki)
    (or boat from Athens ~3h)
  • Short ferry rides in between:
    Paros → Antiparos ~10min
    Paros → Irakleia ~2h
    Irakleia → Schinousa ~15min
    Schinousa → (Ano) Koufonisi ~45min
    (Ano) Koufonisi → Santorini ~2h
  • Fly out from Santorini
(to Europe / Athens / Thessaloniki)
    (or boat to Athens ~5.5h)

No of days:

I would allow for 2 full days in the smaller islands and 3-4 on the larger ones. This is the absolute minimum.

(Even more) extended itinerary:

It would be sacrilegious to explore the Small Cyclades archipelago (Irakleia, Schinousa, Koufonisi) and not visit breathtaking Amorgos. Not sure why I drew this as an optional detour -you have to do it!

The Globetrotter’s Itinerary:
Paros & Antiparos – Irakleia- Schinousa – (Ano) Koufonisi – [Amorgos] – Santorini

One for the explorers. Channel your inner Odysseus, and, here we go.

Discovering the ancient secrets of Santorini. Beach bumming in Koufonisia‘s impossibly turquoise waters, sailing along secluded coves in Schinousa, hiking across the sun-drenched landscapes in Irakleia. And to top all that, Paros and Antiparos will offer you any (and every) kind of holiday you wish for; romantic, family friendly, bohemian vibes, jet setting and anything in between. This is an itinerary for those who want it all.

I went on this exact* trip very recently and, in all honesty, when I was planning this itinerary, I was certain that I was going to regret it. I thought that even with the 2.5 weeks in my disposal, it would be too much. Happily, I was wrong. The trip was perfect. There were a lot of ferries involved, but most of the journeys were quite short so they were not tiring.

So, if you have two weeks or more, do not hesitate, do it! One of my personal favourites.

The Globetrotter’s itinerary is best suited to those of you who travel light. Those of you who are comfortable with ferries and all kinds of sea journeys. Those of you who open the map and see endless opportunities rather than one destination.

Whether you’re embarking on an extended summer adventure, taking a career break or simply fortunate enough to have a little extra time on your hands, this itinerary rewards curiosity in a way few others can.

*with the exclusion of Amorgos which I visited on a separate occasion -as I mention above, if you don’t see yourself visiting the Cyclades again soon, don’t miss out on Amorgos which is such an easy add-on for this itinerary.

TOP 5 PAROS ISLAND HOPPING:
NO4. THE REVELLER’S ITINERARY

Reveller's Itinerary II

Logistics & travel time (on fastest ferries):

  • Fly in to Mykonos
(from Europe / Athens / Thessaloniki)
    (or boat from Athens ~3.5h)
  • Short ferry rides in between:
    Mykonos → Paros ~1h
    Paros → Antiparos ~10min
    Paros → Ios ~1h
  • Boat to Athens from Ios (~4.5h)

No of days:

12 days (approx. 3 days per island)

The Reveller’s Itinerary:
Mykonos – Paros – Antiparos – Ios

Let’s get loud!

But first, I need to clarify. The islands included in this itinerary are by no means only intended for partying. Personally, I have visited most of them with friends and my husband and you can definitely have a relaxing / romantic time in all of them.

However, if you are looking for beach parties or exciting nightlife, you will definitely find that here.

Mykonos will give you plenty of opportunities to revel in luxury amongst the international jetset, whether on the beach or in town. While Mykonos feels polished and upscale, Ios is known for its carefree party atmosphere and lively bar scene centred around Chora. Expect crowded summer nights, late-night dancing and a younger international crowd, particularly during July and August.

Chic Paros offers a more relaxed nightlife scene, particularly around Naousa, where elegant cocktail bars, waterfront lounges and lively late-night spots create a vibrant but less intense atmosphere than Mykonos or Ios.

Last but not least, Antiparos is the dark horse. It is generally considered as an undiscovered, laid-back kind of a place, and it is. But it is also home to a select few legendary bars and nightclubs that stay open until the sun goes up. You can easily find yourself seeing the sunrise with your sandals in one hand and a drink in the other!

Best for? The young and young at heart.

TOP 5 PAROS ISLAND HOPPING:
NO5. THE CYCLADIC EXPLORER’S ITINERARY

Cycladic Explorer's Itinerary

Logistics & travel time (on fastest ferries):

  • Fly in to Paros
    (from Athens / Thessaloniki)
    (or boat from Athens ~3h)
  • Short ferry rides in between:
    Paros → Antiparos ~10min
    Paros → Ano Koufonisi ~1.5h
    Ano Koufonisi → Amorgos ~30min
    Amorgos → Santorini ~1h
  • Fly out from Santorini
(to Europe / Athens / Thessaloniki)
    (or boat to Athens ~5.5h)

No of days:

15 days (approx. 3 days per island)

Shorter route option:

Skip Antiparos or Koufonisi if you don’t enjoy spending the day on the beach (Paros → Amorgos ~2h).

The Cycladic Explorer’s Itinerary:
Paros – Antiparos – (Ano) Koufonisi – Amorgos – Santorini

Did I save the best for last?

The Cycladic Explorer’s itinerary is a variation of ‘the Seafarer’s Itinerary’ that I feature in my Santorini island hopping itineraries and Mykonos island hopping itineraries, the only difference being the starting point (the Seafarer’s starts in Mykonos). The reason why I insist on this island hopping route is simple.

If this is your first (and possibly one and only) trip to Greece, this is my recommended itinerary to take (especially if you are overwhelmed and confused by the amount of options and cannot decide!).

The Cycladic Explorer’s Itinerary brings together five islands that showcase some of the very best the Aegean has to offer. Beginning in Paros and neighbouring Antiparos, continuing through the turquoise waters of Koufonisia and the dramatic landscapes of Amorgos before culminating in Santorini, this route combines iconic destinations with a sense of discovery that few island-hopping itineraries can match.

What makes this journey so special is the variety of experiences it offers. From the cosmopolitan port of Naousa to small island life of Antiparos and Koufonisia and from off the beaten track Amorgos to everyone’s bucket list destination Santorini, each island reveals a different side of Greece.

The route also appeals to a remarkably wide range of travellers. Beach lovers will find some of the most beautiful waters in Greece, nature lovers and explorers can discover the rugged landscapes of Amorgos, while romantics will be drawn to the drama of the caldera and the sunsets of Santorini. Along the way, you will encounter traditional villages, authentic tavernas, centuries of maritime history and some of the most memorable scenery in the Mediterranean.

Combining postcard-perfect landscapes, authentic island life and world-famous destinations, it offers a journey through multiple facets of Greece while remaining unmistakably Cycladic from beginning to end.

HOW TO PLAN YOUR GREEK ISLAND HOPPING TRIP FROM PAROS

I am fully aware that for non-Greeks, checking itineraries and booking ferries or planes for the Greek islands may sound complicated and overwhelming. But that’s what I am here for!

I have explained all about boat services, planes routes and island hopping in the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands in the blog posts linked below. If you are travelling in July or August, I would recommend booking boat and plane tickets early -May at the latest. Most bookings can be made online.

PS. Transiting to the islands via Athens? Make sure to read all about Athens’ airport and ports and how to get from plane to boat and vice versa:

June, July, August and early September is the best time to visit and fully experience the uniqueness of Greek summer. Note that there is usually a pleasant breeze in the islands that makes the heat quite bearable, even in high summer.

Late spring or early autumn may be more appropriate if you wish to go hiking or really hate the heat.

FINAL THOUGHTS

So, that’s all folks! Hopefully, my suggested island hopping itineraries provided you with lots of ideas about combining your trip to Paros with other Greek islands with similar or very different vibes, depending on what you want to get out of your trip. Bear in mind that the above mentioned itineraries can also be done partially which I’d strongly recommend if you are planning a short trip or just want to relax and travel slow.

Should you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Lastly, don’t forget to check out my blog posts about Paros island itself, if you haven’t already. See you on the next one!

      Hi Florencia

Thank you for your kind words. Now, for your itinerary. Starting from Andros (which you can easily get to from Athens), you could take the boat to Mykonos and from there Naxos, Paros and Amorgos can be accessed easily. If you wish to end in Crete, you would have to go to Santorini which you can easily do from Paros and Amorgos. As for Patmos, that’s tricky one, I think you could only get to if you were to visit Astypalaia island from Amorgos. This will be quite a long route and I am not sure if it is available every summer. Have many days will you be in Greece for? You already have many islands on your itinerary so I’d recommend skipping Patmos and concentrating on the Cyclades (the other islands that you mention). Make sure to check a ferry search engine such as Ferryhopper for the tickets. Also have you read these posts from my ‘Greek’s Guide to Greece’ section?
